Often a wine that challenges the idea that the Barossa is not really suited to cabernet, and does so with a vengeance this vintage. Layer-upon-layer of cassis, blackcurrant, quality oak and fine tannins are all in utterly harmonious balance. The wine has a very long life ahead.

The 2009 Ashmead Cabernet Sauvignon is produced from a single estate owned black that was planted prior to WWII. Deep garnet-purple colored, it offers lovely vanilla and spice notes over a core of black currants and blackberries with hints of pencil shavings and cedar. Medium to full bodied, it is both rich and nicely poised on the palate with a solid backbone of medium-firm fine grained tannins, crisp acid and a long and spicy finish. Drink this one 2014 to 2024+.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2009 Shiraz gives notes of ripe blackberries, dried mulberries, chocolate and spice box with suggestions of eucalypt, anise and vanilla. Full bodied and generously fruited in the mouth, it gives a low to medium level of soft tannins, crisp acid and a long finish. Drinking nicely now, it should keep to 2019.

The 2007 Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon has a very deep garnet-black color and presents moderately intense aromas of warm cassis and blackberries with some Mediterranean herbs, cloves and moss covered bark. All estate grown off 45-70 year vines, the 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Elderton Estate is matured for about 18 months in French (20%) and American (80%) oak puncheons, 20% new. Deep garnet-purple colored, it has intense cassis and warm blackberry aromas with some cinnamon, cumin, cardamom and lead pencil nuances. Medium to full-bodied with a medium to firm level of fine tannins and crisp acid, thereâ€™s a hint of toasty oak in the long finish. This wine is approachable now and should continue to drink through 2017.

Although the property was purchased by their grandfather, brothers Al and Cameron Ashmead are really the second generation of Ashmeads at the Elderton helm since it was their parents Neil and Lorraine that rose to the challenge of developing this into one of the Barossaâ€™s top wineries. The first Ashmead vintage was in 1982. The jewel here is the 8 acre estate vineyard planted in 1894 by Samuel Elderton Tolley (one of the largest 100+ year old vineyards on the planet) that produces the Command Shiraz, with the 66 year old Ashmead Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard also giving exceptional fruit. Since 2003 theyâ€™ve had their own winery and now produce around 40-50000 cases per year with winemaker Richard Langford adeptly forging a range of predominately red wines from the good value end right up to the sought-after collectibles. The Cabernet Sauvignon Ashmead Elderton Estate comes from a single block on the estate planted before WWII. Cameron informed me that itâ€™s difficult to get more than Â½ ton per acre out of these vines. The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Ashmead Elderton Estate was matured in 100% new French oak hogsheads for 18 months. Medium garnet-purple in color, it has an intensely scented nose of cassis, earth, cloves and pencil shavings plus nuances of game and dark chocolate. Full-bodied and opulent in the mouth, the complex flavors are exquisitely balanced by firm fine grained tannins and a good line of acid. It finishes very long. The wine is still a bit tight and primary with the oak jutting out a touch so itâ€™s recommended to keep this one 2-3 years and drink it 2013 to 2020+.

Deep purple with a bright rim. Highly aromatic bouquet of blackberry liqueur, cassis, cured tobacco, candied licorice and floral oils, plus a peppery overtone; smells like an essence of cabernet. Vibrant, palate-staining dark berry and bitter cherry flavors are given spine by tangy acidity, with supple tannins lending shape. The floral and tobacco notes come back strong on the sappy, penetrating, very long finish. For a rich wine this is awfully lively. I'd hold onto it for at least another six years before popping a cork but it's undeniably sexy now. 92(+?) points (Josh Raynolds)

Lurid violet color. Wild, ripe and pungent aromas of dark berries, spicecake, smoke and potpourri; smells like a cult Napa wine. Big, rich and full, with alluring sweetness to the blueberry, blackberry, rose pastille and candied licorice flavors.
