30th November 1999 DIVINE FOOD &WINEA white blended from Marsanne and Viognier grapes. Rutherglen Estates caught my eye last year with their well crafted, food friendly and European wine styles. The lovely peach, apricot, honey and spice characters of the viognier meld with the drier more savoury features of the Marsanne very well. Try this with roast chicken wrapped in pancetta. 28th July 2007 THE CANBERRA TIMESA $15 white that has something to offer is a rare thing but it's exactly what "The Alliance" is. It's a blend of mostly marsanne picked up with a good dose of luscious viognier. Savoury notes pf nougat are layered over pear, almond and dried apricot flavours. The palate is full but finishes with a crisp, dry note, a delicious combination.

2008 ELDERTON NEIL ASHMEAD "GTS" SHIRAZ
30th December 2009 PARKER'S THE WINE ADVOCATE #186The 2008 Neil Ashmead GTS is a Shiraz cuvee from the riper 2008 vintage. Purple-colored, it has an alluring bouquet of damp earth, lavender, pepper, bacon, and blueberry. Full-bodied on the palate, it has a glossy texture, layered flavors bordering on opulent, incipient complexity, plenty of depth and richness, and a long, fruit-filled finish. It can be enjoyed now but will drink well for a decade. Author:Jay Miller

2007 HEATHCOTE II "MYOLA"CAB SAUVIGNON
30th December 2009 ROBERT PARKER THE WINE ADVOCATEThe 2007 Myola is a blend of 30% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, 23% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 22% Shiraz that was naturally fermented and bottled without fining or filtration. A teeth-staining purple/black color, it offers up a port-like perfume of assorted black fruits that jump from the glass. Full-bodied (the label says 15% alcohol but I don’t believe it for a second), dense, extracted, and structured, it has tons of fruit in a go-for-broke style reminiscent of the late-harvest Zinfandels from Mayacamas and Montevina in the 1970s. Those who don’t fear going all-in should bury a few bottles in the cellar for curiosity’s sake if nothing else. Heathcote II is an 11 acre estate producing 900 cases of no-holds-barred red wines that will offend those with dainty palates and please those looking for a big smack in the face. (Jay Miller)

1st April 2010 ROBERT PARKER'S WINE ADVOCATEThe 2008 Shiraz Viognier is one of the finest vintages that I’ve tasted of this wine. Co-fermented with 6% Viognier, it was matured for 12 months in French oak, 30% new. The nose is a little closed and needs coaxing at this stage to reveal complex notes of smoky bacon and loam followed by licorice, red plums, crushed blackberries, peach blossoms and rose petals. Crisp acidity, medium level of very fine tannins and layers of savory and dark berry flavors. Very long finish. Drink 2014 to 2024.

30th October 2010 ROBERT PARKER’S THE WINE ADVOCATE20% of the 2009 Isolation Ridge Riesling was fermented in large old oak. “This decision was really about texture rather than taste and added complexities,†Judy told me. The wine didn’t spend too long in oak and was soon transferred to temperature controlled stainless steel. It has medium intense aromas of lime juice, chalk dust, orange blossom, some grapefruit and a pleasant wet slate character. Dry, crisp, with a light to medium body and intensely citrusy flavors on the palate, it finishes long and steely. Drinking now it should evolve over the next 5-7 years and keep to 2020+. 91 Points “We planted Riesling when we planted our vineyard in 1988,†Judy Cullam of Frankland Estate explained when we met. “There’s a big Riesling vineyard next to us that Houghton’s had been leasing, so we knew the variety would do well. Our first vintage was the 1991. In the beginning when we would show the wine people would say to us, ‘Oh no, come back with a Chardonnay’.†Fortunately that attitude is changing and many wine cognoscenti now know that the Frankland region is begetting some world class Rieslings. Since 2001 Frankland Estate has moved from producing a regional blend to making three very impressive single vineyard Rieslings: Isolation Ridge, Cooladerra Ridge and Poison Hill. 1st December 2010 ROBERT PARKER'S WINE ADVOCATEThe Cabernet Sauvignon Ashmead Elderton Estate comes from a single block on the estate planted before WWII. Cameron informed me that it’s difficult to get more than ½ ton per acre out of these vines. The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Ashmead Elderton Estate was matured in 100% new French oak hogsheads for 18 months. Medium garnet-purple in color, it has an intensely scented nose of cassis, earth, cloves and pencil shavings plus nuances of game and dark chocolate. Full-bodied and opulent in the mouth, the complex flavors are exquisitely balanced by firm fine grained tannins and a good line of acid. It finishes very long. The wine is still a bit tight and primary with the oak jutting out a touch so it’s recommended to keep this one 2-3 years and drink it 2013 to 2020+.

Deep garnet-purple in color, it has pronounced blackberry and blueberry aromas with some licorice and Mediterranean herb notes plus subtle hints of pepper, chocolate and cedar. Medium to full-bodied with medium-firm finely grained tannins and high acid supporting the generous, fleshy berry and spice fruit, it has a long, pure finish. Although the property was purchased by their grandfather, brothers Al and Cameron Ashmead are really the second generation of Ashmeads at the Elderton helm since it was their parents Neil and Lorraine that rose to the challenge of developing this into one of the Barossa’s top wineries. The first Ashmead vintage was in 1982. The jewel here is the 8 acre estate vineyard planted in 1894 by Samuel Elderton Tolley (one of the largest 100+ year old vineyards on the planet) that produces the Command Shiraz, with the 66 year old Ashmead Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard also giving exceptional fruit. A glass-coating purple/black color with legs that ooze down the glass, it displays a full-throttle perfume of tar, espresso, blueberry, and blackberry. On the palate it is amazingly dense, rich, and succulent. Full extraction in a late-harvest style will limit this wine’s appeal but for those who enjoy being blown away, it will induce spasms of joyous pleasure. Who knows how it will evolve but I’d like to try it again in a decade. This is a solid, regional Rutherglen red with dark colour, dried-herb/bay leaf aromas and plenty of tannin. There are smoke and dry spice aromas, too, while the taste is robust and finishes very dry. A good solid food wine, and the price makes it a gift. Drink now to six years. 13.5% alcohol. 88/100

AUSTRALIAN WINE COMPANION 2013
30th October 2012 JAMES HALLIDAYOften a wine that challenges the idea that the Barossa is not really suited to cabernet, and does so with a vengeance this vintage. Layer-upon-layer of cassis, blackcurrant, quality oak and fine tannins are all in utterly harmonious balance. The wine has a very long life ahead.
