A $15 white that has something to offer is a rare thing but it's exactly what "The Alliance" is. It's a blend of mostly marsanne picked up with a good dose of luscious viognier. Savoury notes pf nougat are layered over pear, almond and dried apricot flavours. The palate is full but finishes with a crisp, dry note, a delicious combination.

The 2007 Myola is a blend of 30% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, 23% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 22% Shiraz that was naturally fermented and bottled without fining or filtration. A teeth-staining purple/black color, it offers up a port-like perfume of assorted black fruits that jump from the glass. Full-bodied (the label says 15% alcohol but I donâ€™t believe it for a second), dense, extracted, and structured, it has tons of fruit in a go-for-broke style reminiscent of the late-harvest Zinfandels from Mayacamas and Montevina in the 1970s. Those who donâ€™t fear going all-in should bury a few bottles in the cellar for curiosityâ€™s sake if nothing else. Heathcote II is an 11 acre estate producing 900 cases of no-holds-barred red wines that will offend those with dainty palates and please those looking for a big smack in the face. (Jay Miller)

The 2008 Shiraz Viognier is one of the finest vintages that Iâ€™ve tasted of this wine. Co-fermented with 6% Viognier, it was matured for 12 months in French oak, 30% new. The nose is a little closed and needs coaxing at this stage to reveal complex notes of smoky bacon and loam followed by licorice, red plums, crushed blackberries, peach blossoms and rose petals. Crisp acidity, medium level of very fine tannins and layers of savory and dark berry flavors. Very long finish. Drink 2014 to 2024.

Vivid ruby. Youthful red and dark berry skin and cherry on the nose, with complicating notes of licorice and smoked meat coming up with aeration. Tangy and sharply focused, offering racy raspberry and bitter cherry flavors framed by silky tannins. Weightier on the finish, which features persistent notes of cassis and cherry-cola. There's lots going on now but I'd give this nicely structured shiraz at least another three or four years of bottle age.

20% of the 2009 Isolation Ridge Riesling was fermented in large old oak. â€œThis decision was really about texture rather than taste and added complexities,â€ Judy told me. The wine didnâ€™t spend too long in oak and was soon transferred to temperature controlled stainless steel. It has medium intense aromas of lime juice, chalk dust, orange blossom, some grapefruit and a pleasant wet slate character. Dry, crisp, with a light to medium body and intensely citrusy flavors on the palate, it finishes long and steely. Drinking now it should evolve over the next 5-7 years and keep to 2020+. 91 Points â€œWe planted Riesling when we planted our vineyard in 1988,â€ Judy Cullam of Frankland Estate explained when we met. â€œThereâ€™s a big Riesling vineyard next to us that Houghtonâ€™s had been leasing, so we knew the variety would do well. Our first vintage was the 1991. In the beginning when we would show the wine people would say to us, â€˜Oh no, come back with a Chardonnayâ€™.â€ Fortunately that attitude is changing and many wine cognoscenti now know that the Frankland region is begetting some world class Rieslings. Only made in select years (2007 and 2003 thus far), Ode to Lorraine is a wine made in homage to Al and Cameronâ€™s mum, who remains the â€œuberbossâ€ of the operation. A blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Shiraz and 8% Merlot, the 2008 Ode to Lorraine spent 18 months in new and seasoned French and American hogsheads. Deep garnet-purple colored, it gives intense blueberry, black currant and spice box aromas with hints of prunes, licorice and some earth. Rich and full-bodied with medium to firm grainy tannins and plenty of enlivening acid, it finishes long with layers of mulberry and spice flavors. Approachable now, it should soften more in a year or so and drink best from 2012 to 2020+.

The Cabernet Sauvignon Ashmead Elderton Estate comes from a single block on the estate planted before WWII. Cameron informed me that itâ€™s difficult to get more than Â½ ton per acre out of these vines. The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Ashmead Elderton Estate was matured in 100% new French oak hogsheads for 18 months. Medium garnet-purple in color, it has an intensely scented nose of cassis, earth, cloves and pencil shavings plus nuances of game and dark chocolate. Full-bodied and opulent in the mouth, the complex flavors are exquisitely balanced by firm fine grained tannins and a good line of acid. It finishes very long. The wine is still a bit tight and primary with the oak jutting out a touch so itâ€™s recommended to keep this one 2-3 years and drink it 2013 to 2020+.

The 2007 HD Shiraz is a slightly more conventional effort (but barely). One puncheon (500-liters) was produced of this hand destemmed, inky-colored Shiraz. A glass-coating purple/black color with legs that ooze down the glass, it displays a full-throttle perfume of tar, espresso, blueberry, and blackberry. On the palate it is amazingly dense, rich, and succulent. Full extraction in a late-harvest style will limit this wineâ€™s appeal but for those who enjoy being blown away, it will induce spasms of joyous pleasure. Who knows how it will evolve but Iâ€™d like to try it again in a decade. Heathcote II is an 11 acre estate producing 900 cases of no-holds-barred red wines that will offend those with dainty palates and please those looking for a big smack in the face.

At the asking price, it is also an outstanding value from the pricy DO of Ribera del Duero.

The 2010 Corte dâ€™Oro is made up of 40% Malbec, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 15% Petit Verdot, with an expressive nose that jumps from the glass. Sweet, succulent, and already complex, this deep, concentrated, lengthy effort is likely to evolve for another 2-3 years and drink well through 2025.

The owner of the Ojo de Vino Estate responsible for the Puro wines is Dieter Meier, famous in the field of techno music. The Puro wines are Certified Organic. (Jay Miller)

The 2009 Malbec (55%) â€“ Cabernet (45%) offers up an especially expressive nose for its humble price. Asian spices, incense, floral notes, cherry cola, and assorted black fruits lead to a savory, sweetly-fruited, forward wine. In the glass it opens to reveal excellent volume, balance, and length. It is an excellent value meant for drinking over the next 5-6 years.

Medium to full-bodied with a good backbone of medium level silky tannins and crisp acid, it offers plenty of spicy, ripe fruit flavors and a long finish. Drinking well now, it should keep to 2017+. The 2008 Command Shiraz comes from 1894 Shiraz plantings of a single estate owned block of 8 acres. It spends 3 years in 100% new oak, 65% American, 35% French. Deep garnet-purple colored, it displays moderate to intense blackberry preserve and dried mulberry aromas with an undercurrent of anise, Indian spices, yeast extract and black pepper. Full bodied, rich and opulent in the mouth, it has a medium level of velvety tannins, refreshing acid and a very long, very spicy finish. Drink it now to 2021+

Produced from 50% botrytis and 50% cane cut fruit, the 2011 Botrytis Semillon offers a medium straw color and intense notes of lemon marmalade, honey, candied peel, dried apricots and a hint of musk. Very rich, sweet and crisp in the mouth, it fills the mouth with expressive fruit and finishes long with some spices coming through. Drink it now to 2017+.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2009 Shiraz gives notes of ripe blackberries, dried mulberries, chocolate and spice box with suggestions of eucalypt, anise and vanilla. Full bodied and generously fruited in the mouth, it gives a low to medium level of soft tannins, crisp acid and a long finish. Drinking nicely now, it should keep to 2019.

The 2009 Ashmead Cabernet Sauvignon is produced from a single estate owned black that was planted prior to WWII. Deep garnet-purple colored, it offers lovely vanilla and spice notes over a core of black currants and blackberries with hints of pencil shavings and cedar. Medium to full bodied, it is both rich and nicely poised on the palate with a solid backbone of medium-firm fine grained tannins, crisp acid and a long and spicy finish. Drink this one 2014 to 2024+.
